About the Material
What exactly is Iraca palm? Iraca (Carludovica palmata) is a tropical herbaceous plant native to Colombia and South America. Despite its appearance, it’s not a true palm but a species with large fan-shaped leaves. From its hearts, a soft, flexible, and resistant fiber is extracted that Colombian artisans have been weaving since pre-Columbian times.
Is it the same as toquilla straw? Yes. Iraca fiber, once processed and dyed, is the same fiber known as “toquilla straw” — the material used to make the famous Panama hats, whose true origin is Colombian-Ecuadorian.
Is it an ecological material? Completely. Iraca is 100% natural, biodegradable, and of plant origin. Its cultivation is sustainable: a single plant can produce for generations without being depleted, and responsible harvesting doesn’t damage the ecosystem.
Are the dyes safe? Our products use natural or non-toxic industrial dyes. Colors are fixed during the fiber preparation process to ensure durability.
About Manufacturing
Are the products really hand-made? Yes, each piece is entirely hand-woven by artisans from Usiacurí. There’s no machinery that can replicate the stitching techniques they master — some of more than 32 different varieties, such as ojito de perdiz (partridge eye), embroidered diamond, or starfish flower. That’s what makes each piece unique.
Why are no two pieces exactly alike? Because they’re crafts. Small variations in weaving, material tone, or fiber tension are the seal that a real person, with their own way of weaving, made that piece. That’s precisely what gives them value.
How long does it take to make a piece? It depends on complexity. A simple piece can take one or two days; one with elaborate stitches or large format can require a week or more of continuous work.
About Use and Durability
Are the products durable? Yes. Iraca palm fiber has proven mechanical properties: it’s rigid, hard, and stable even at high temperatures. Products for daily use like bags, home items, and accessories are designed to last.
Can I wet my product? Moderate water exposure won’t damage the piece — just let it air dry in the shade. However, we don’t recommend submerging pieces with complex structures or exposing untreated pieces to prolonged rain.
Can I use it on the beach or in humid climates? Yes. Iraca is a tropical fiber, accustomed to warm and humid climates like Colombia’s. It’s an ideal material for summer and heat.
Do the colors fade? With normal care, colors are durable. Avoid prolonged exposure to strong sun and washing with hot water or harsh products to preserve color intensity.
