Handmade bags
Cangrejo
About this piece
The Cangrejo bag is a signature piece hand-woven in Iraca palm by artisans in Usiacuri, Atlantico, with a crab silhouette worked entirely in fibre: the shell is embroidered in red with the carapace lines marked stitch by stitch, while the claws and legs open into fuchsia and orange gradients that shift tone with the light. The eyes are two hand-sewn black beads, and the top handle is built into the weave itself, so there is no glue and no mould anywhere: the shape holds by the tension of the stitch alone. Gold-tone rings on each side let you wear it cross-body or carry it by hand. This is an occasion bag, made for a daytime event, a beach wedding, a holiday, or any outing where the bag is the piece people look at. Each unit is woven start to finish by one artisan over several days, so tonal variation from one crab to the next is expected and part of the piece.
